The International Testing Agency (ITA) has handed down a significant sanction to Russian weightlifter Mikhail Gobeev, imposing a 4-year period of ineligibility. This decision comes as a result of Gobeev's violation of the prohibition against participation during a period of ineligibility or provisional suspension. The ITA's findings reveal that Gobeev, who was previously banned for four years by the Anti-Doping Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS ADD) on January 18, 2023, for using prohibited substances between May 2012 and May 2013, has now been sanctioned with an additional 4-year period of ineligibility. The ITA's investigation uncovered that Gobeev, while under a provisional suspension and/or ineligibility, acted as a coach, judge, referee, and organizer of various weightlifting events and held official positions within his regional weightlifting federation from July 2022 to the present. The ITA's sanction, in accordance with Article 8.3.3 of the IWF anti-doping rules, revoked the credit for the provisional suspension received between April 22, 2022, and January 18, 2023, and imposed an additional period of ineligibility, effective from January 18, 2027, until January 17, 2031. Those with the right of appeal can challenge the decision before the appeals division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) according to Article 13.2 of the IWF anti-doping rules. The ITA will not provide further commentary on this case.
