The research team suggests that the hobbits, in search of food, ventured into areas already occupied by Homo sapiens, setting the stage for potential conflict. And this is the part most people miss: the hobbits' primary prey, Stegodon, an ancient relative of elephants, was also declining due to the drought.
To understand the changing climate, the researchers studied stalagmites in caves on the island of Flores. These natural formations, formed by water evaporation, revealed a dramatic decline in rainfall over time. The hobbits' world was literally drying up, and with it, their food sources.
"It makes sense for the hobbits to have followed [the Stegodon]," said Nick Scroxton, a co-author of the study. As the Stegodon populations migrated to the coasts, the hobbits likely followed suit, bringing them into direct competition with Homo sapiens.
But the challenges didn't end there. A volcanic eruption around 50,000 years ago further exacerbated their plight.
Julien Luoys, a palaeontologist not involved in the research, praised the study, noting that "a reduction in rainfall can have a major impact on an island as small as Flores."
