The NBA Cup semifinals will now be hosted by the higher-seeded team in their home market. For instance, the Thunder would have welcomed the San Antonio Spurs to OKC for their semifinal showdown. The championship game, however, will still be held in Las Vegas.
The Thunder, having experienced the Las Vegas distractions for two consecutive years, embrace this change. It grants them an additional home game, where they've been nearly invincible, except for a couple of shocking playoff game-winners last year.
Mark Daigneault, the Thunder's head coach, is a huge fan of this alteration. It provides an extra incentive beyond the half-million-dollar grand prize awaiting the NBA Cup champion.
"I think it's a great move by the league, offering further incentive. They want these Cup games to be prestigious events. The cash prize and the unique branding certainly help. These games are isolated to specific nights and are televised, which adds to their appeal. But the real incentive is the potential for an extra home game," Daigneault explained.
The Thunder has utilized the NBA Cup as a dress rehearsal for the NBA playoffs. Once we reach that stage of the season, the spotlight intensifies tenfold. Everyone in OKC should be aware of this, especially after their dramatic seven-game series in the 2025 NBA Finals.
I personally like this change. It reduces travel fatigue. Teams shouldn't be penalized for advancing to the NBA Cup semifinals. The Thunder has experienced this firsthand over the last two years, with their post-Cup schedule taking them across time zones and creating back-to-back games. Last year, they traveled to Florida for a quick turnaround against the Orlando Magic and Miami Heat. This year, their home game against the LA Clippers was pushed back, creating an additional back-to-back scenario.
