Attention all drivers in Lancashire: a significant change is on the horizon that you won't want to overlook! As we edge into 2026, new traffic cameras are set to activate, and the local council is issuing a stern warning about compliance with road rules.
Lancashire County Council is preparing to launch automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) systems at four strategic locations across Preston, Lancaster, and Accrington. This initiative aims to enforce traffic regulations more effectively starting early this coming year.
Once operational, these cameras will monitor for violations like restricted turns and no-entry signs. Offenders could face a fine of £70, which can be reduced to £35 if settled within 21 days.
Interestingly, although the council received approval for these cameras three years ago, they have only recently confirmed their implementation, citing the need to ensure these installations are cost-effective for taxpayers.
The specific dates for activation remain somewhat unclear, but the council assures residents that it is just around the corner. They emphasized their commitment to ensuring that these cameras deliver genuine value and contribute to improving safety and traffic flow for everyone on the road—especially in areas where local residents have expressed concerns.
"We’re excited to introduce these enforcement measures soon and appreciate the patience shown by our community during this process," stated a council spokesperson. They went on to cheekily remind drivers: "We’ll be watching you."
Here’s where you can expect to see these cameras:
- Charnley Street, Preston: Monitoring the no-entry restriction towards Corporation Street, near the Fishergate car park entrance.
- Ringway/Bow Lane Traffic Lights, Preston: Enforcing the no right turn onto Marsh Lane from westbound Ringway traffic, as well as prohibiting U-turns in both directions.
- Morecambe Road Junction, Lancaster: Keeping an eye on drivers attempting to make a right turn from the Aldi supermarket access road onto the main thoroughfare.
- Hyndburn Road, Accrington: Overseeing the no right turn into the Viaduct Retail Park from the main road.
What do you think about the implementation of these traffic cameras? Do you feel safer knowing they will be monitoring compliance, or do you see it as an invasion of privacy? We’d love to hear your thoughts! Share your opinions in the comments below.
