Co-owner Wemo Edudu transformed this once book-themed nightclub into a high-end dining destination two years ago, aiming to attract a broader audience without sacrificing the city’s legendary late-night energy. “I’ve seen a 65-year-old man enjoying a meal while watching the show—something unimaginable just two years ago,” Edudu shared with AFP. This shift reflects a growing appetite for sophisticated entertainment in a city of 20 million, where nightlife is as diverse as its population.

Rococo, an upscale restaurant on Victoria Island, is a prime example. The irony isn’t lost on anyone: a gold-plated menu that costs multiples of the monthly minimum wage in a nation where oil wealth coexists with poverty. In a city known for its party culture, transitioning to more nuanced entertainment can be tough. “Some Lagosians are more into partying than appreciating the arts,” notes Rodrigo Adame, a Mexican circus performer. “As an artist, it’s hard to capture their attention when everyone’s glued to their phones.” And he’s right—on any given night at Zaza, which holds 700 patrons, you’ll see just as many screens lighting up the dark room.
