Kuki Students Protest: Rejecting Manipur's New Government (2026)

The Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO) has taken a bold stand against the so-called 'popular government' in Manipur. In a powerful statement, the KSO asserts that this government lacks the necessary moral and political legitimacy in the eyes of the Kuki-Zo community, who continue to suffer the aftermath of displacement, fear, and trauma.

During a protest at Jantar Mantar, the KSO made it clear that the attempt to portray administrative normalcy without addressing the root causes of the crisis is simply unacceptable. They emphasize that the Kuki-Zo people no longer recognize themselves as part of Manipur's political and administrative system, citing an 'irreversible political rupture' that has shattered any sense of trust and coexistence.

The humanitarian cost of this crisis is staggering. The KSO highlights the loss of 226 Kuki-Zo lives, the burning of over 200 villages, the destruction of more than 7,000 homes, the arson of over 360 places of worship, and the displacement of over 41,425 people since the violence erupted on May 3, 2023.

But here's where it gets controversial: the KSO believes that mere political statements and symbolic gestures are not enough to bring peace and heal the deep wounds of this community. They demand a separate administration under a Union Territory with Legislature, similar to the Pondicherry model, arguing that this is the only viable and lasting solution to ensure the safety and justice that the Kuki-Zo people deserve.

The KSO calls on the Government of India to take immediate action, including arresting those responsible for the violence, investigating leaked audio recordings linked to former CM N Biren Singh, prosecuting perpetrators of crimes against the Kuki-Zo people, and fast-tracking political dialogue towards establishing a separate administration.

This is a complex issue with far-reaching implications. What do you think? Is a separate administration the answer to ensuring justice and peace for the Kuki-Zo people? Share your thoughts and let's spark a conversation!
