A Formula 1 Legend Departs: Helmut Marko's Red Bull Era Comes to an End. For over two decades, Helmut Marko has been a pivotal figure in the Red Bull Racing dynasty. Now, after an incredible 25-year tenure leading the Red Bull driver academy, the Austrian motorsport icon is stepping away at the close of the 2025 season.
Marko's departure wasn't entirely unexpected. Rumors swirled in the Abu Dhabi paddock, despite his contract extending into 2026. Discussions took place at the Yas Marina Circuit, involving Marko and top Red Bull management, including Sporting CEO Oliver Mintzlaff.
Marko reflected on his remarkable journey, stating, "I have been involved in motorsport for six decades now, and the past 20-plus years at Red Bull have been an extraordinary and extremely successful journey." He emphasized the pride in what they built together, adding that narrowly missing out on the world championship this season solidified his decision.
Mintzlaff expressed his regret, acknowledging Marko's profound influence. He highlighted Marko's role in shaping the team for over two decades, calling his departure the end of an extraordinary era. He respected Marko's decision, recognizing the impact he has made.
But here's where it gets controversial... Marko's influence extends far beyond just the driver academy. He has served as an advisor since 2005, guiding Red Bull's F1 activities, including the main team in Milton Keynes and the Faenza-based Racing Bulls (formerly Toro Rosso).
Before his management career, Marko was a former F1 driver and Le Mans 24 Hours winner. His career was cut short by an eye injury in the 1972 French Grand Prix. He then transitioned into management, founding the RSM Marko team, which competed in various racing series.
Under Marko's leadership, the Red Bull Junior Team has nurtured an impressive roster of 18 F1 racers. This includes champions like Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen, both of whom have achieved significant success in the sport.
As an advisor, Marko worked alongside former team principal Christian Horner, contributing to the team's impressive record of eight drivers' titles and six constructors' crowns.
