Spirit: Rock Canyon, Roosevelt, University Claim Pom State Titles
DENVER - The Colorado High School Activities Association concluded its 2025 Spirit State Championships on Saturday with the Pom, Hip-Hop, and Jazz competitions at the Denver Coliseum. The event showcased the prowess of several teams in the pom category, with some impressive performances and record-breaking achievements.
Among the champions, University, Roosevelt, and Rock Canyon stood out for their consistent dominance. University claimed its second consecutive 2A/4A Pom title, showcasing their skill and dedication. Roosevelt, a powerhouse in the 4A category, secured their fifth straight 4A Pom title, a testament to their unwavering excellence. Rock Canyon, in the 5A division, extended their winning streak to three state titles in five years, solidifying their status as a force to be reckoned with.
2A/3A Pom
University, second after the opening routine, delivered a flawless performance in the finals, earning a zero-deduction score of 84.3. This marked their second consecutive championship in the 2A/3A category. The Bulldogs, with a remarkable seven pom state championships, have dominated the scene since 2016, capturing titles in every even-numbered year. Head coach Gina Shepherd expressed her gratitude, highlighting the team's hard work and the community's support.
SkyView Academy, a two-time 2A Pom champion (2022 and 2023), finished second with a deduction-free score of 83.15, showcasing their competitive spirit.
4A Pom
The 4A Pom title was fiercely contested, with Roosevelt and Holy Family finishing with a narrow margin of 0.025 points. Roosevelt emerged victorious, claiming their fifth consecutive 4A Pom title. Head coach Brittany Coleman emphasized the importance of staying true to their style, encouraging the team to fight and give their all. This triumph marks Roosevelt's sixth overall spirit title, including their 4A Co-Ed Cheer championship in 2023.
The Roughriders, with a score of 89.475, secured the top spot, while Holy Family closely followed at 89.45. Standley Lake took third place with 82.025, Pueblo County was fourth with 81.175, and Windsor finished fifth with 80.85.
5A Pom
Rock Canyon and Cherry Creek's dominance in the 5A Pom discipline continued, having won the last seven state championships and consistently finishing in the top two over the past six years. However, it was Rock Canyon that made history, achieving their third consecutive 5A Pom title, a feat never before accomplished in the 5A division. Head coach Christina Leone attributed this success to the team's motivation and determination to make history.
With a winning score of 88.475, Rock Canyon claimed their 12th overall spirit championship, while Cherry Creek secured second place with 87.375. Legend took third with 87.225, Legacy was fourth with 86.7, and Ponderosa finished fifth with 85.65.
This three-peat for Rock Canyon not only marks their eighth overall poms title but also their fifth in the last six years, inspiring a new generation of athletes to strive for excellence.
